Police investigating possible link between bar fight with knife, car fire
VINALHAVEN — A Vinalhaven man is in jail and his car was destroyed by fire following a fight at the Sand Bar restaurant on the island's Main Street late Friday night.
Christopher Weller, 26, was arrested overnight and charged with class A aggravated assault. Weller is accused of being in a fight with Jason Hamilton, 41, also of Vinalhaven, and pulling out a knife on Hamilton. A 20-year-old Vinalhaven woman, Amelia Davidson, said she attempted to break up the fight and she and Hamilton both sustained knife injuries, according to Chief Deputy Tim Carroll.
Knox County Sheriff's Deputy Robert Potter was called to a residence on Summer Street around 11:30 p.m. for a report of an individual that had been in a fight and sustained injuries. According to Chief Deputy Tim Carroll, while en route to the call Potter was told two people were at the Sand Bar restaurant who had been involved in a fight and sustained cuts from a knife.
Upon arrival at Weller's residence, Potter found the man had bruises to his head and face, and a cut on the wrist. At the Sand Bar, Potter found that Hamilton and Davidson were also injured, Davidson with a cut across her forehead.
Hamilton refused to write a statement and refused medical treatment, according to Carroll.
Approximately 90 minutes after the call about the fight, Potter was called to a report of a vehicle on fire near the intersection of Atlantic and Main streets. Vinalhaven Fire Department also responded to the fully engulfed car fire, and put it out. The car was considered a total loss, according to Carroll.
The State Fire Marshal's Office has been called to assist in the investigation of the suspicious fire, as the vehicle belonged to Weller.
Both the fight and car fire remain under investigation. Weller was transported to Knox County Jail in Rockland with assistance from the U.S. Coast Guard.
