Penobscot Narrows observatory opening delayed
PROSPECT - The Penobscot Narrows Bridge Observatory normally opens for tours at the beginning of May, but this year the start of the season has been pushed back to May 24 to accommodate the ongoing demolition of the adjacent Waldo-Hancock bridge.
When the Observatory opens for the season, normal visitor hours will resume from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Extended hours take effect in July and August, when observatory will remain open until 6 p.m.
The Penobscot Narrows Bridge opened in late 2006 and replacing the Waldo-Hancock Bridge as the Route 1 crossing between Prospect and Verona Island. The observatory, which opened the following spring at the top of the western tower is the only bridge observatory in the United States, according to the Maine Department of Transportation, and one of four bridge observatories in the world. The observatory is 420 feet above the river and offers 360 degree views of the surrounding area.
