Nicer weather ahead, leave your pets at home
ROCKLAND — The weather report is calling for clearing skies and warmer temperatures, and that means it is best to leave your furry friends at home.
It may feel cooler outside than it was a couple of weeks ago, but when the sun starts shining, the temperature inside a car can rise to dangerous levels for pets left behind.
Police from Rockland to Camden are still fielding calls about dogs being left inside parked cars, including at the local hospital, and so far there have been no reports of tragedies as a result. In most cases, owners have returned quickly to their cars, or the dogs were found to be in well ventilated spaces, in the shade and showing no signs of distress.
But that doesn’t mean pets can be safely left alone inside parked cars this time of year. According to the National Humane Society, it takes just 10 minutes for the temperature inside a car to go from 75 degrees Fahrenheit to 100 F. Within 30 minutes, that comfy 75 F has risen to 120 F. When the inside temperature starts out at 85 F, it takes less time, 7-10 minutes, to rise to 120 F.
Friday’s skies continue to be overcast, but the weather report is calling for partly sunny skies and temperatures in the low 70s through Monday. Tuesday and beyond, the temperatures will be warmer still, with lots of sun.
Be safe, and enjoy the clearing skies this weekend and next week.
