More than 500 classic cars cruised in to Waldoboro car show

WALDOBORO — An estimated 2,000 people attended the 12th annual Cruisin' to Graduation Car Show at Medomak Valley High School May 5, an event that began in 2002 as a small car show to benefit MVHS' Project Graduation. This year, the show drew approximately 530 vehicles, 420 of which registered for a chance to win one of 115 trophies or plaques, according to event spokeswoman Elizabeth-Ann Bartlett.
Winners from this year included a 1956 Mercury four-door sedan owned by Robert Day, which took home the People's Choice award, and a 1956 Chevrolet Corvette owned by Donna Miller, which won Best of Show.
According to a press release, this year's show included more than 35 car, truck and motorcycle classes, with new classes being created each year due to increasing participation and demand.
Proceeds from the Cruisin' to Graduation show not only benefit the high school's graduating class and its graduation night activities, but also provide seed money for the freshman, sophomore and junior classes' future celebrations. Profits also fund a $500 scholarship for a graduating senior pursuing an education in the automotive field.
The MVHS Class of 2013 will spend their Project Graduation night at Penobscot Bay YMCA, where they will participate in chem-free activities throughout the night and into the morning.
Bartlett said it was a "great day," despite many reported sunburns — due to the pleasant weather.
Next year's Cruisin' to Graduation Car Show is planned for Sunday, May 4, 2014. More information is available at the Cruisin' to Graduation website and Facebook page.
