Midcoast Solid Waste needs help going ‘peanut free’

ROCKPORT — As the holiday season begins to ramp up, and packages are being shipped to and fro, Mid-coast Solid Waste Corp. is seeking help keeping the transfer station on Union Street in Rockport “peanut free.”
The peanuts that MCSWC deal with don’t cause anaphylaxis or other serious health issues, but they do cause serious issues to the transfer station’s sorting and baling equipment. Foam packing peanuts are a real headache and must be removed from all packaging that is recycled.
Packing peanuts, foam cushions and the air-filled plastic bags favored by some businesses and shipping companies are not recycleable. Unfortunately, these items must go into the trash, in the yellow pay-as-you-throw bags.
Tips from MCSWC:
• Shipping boxes: Remember to break down corrugated cardboard boxes before recycling, which is also a good way to avoid placing this product in the bin.
• Ribbons, bows and tinsel: All ribbons, bows and tinsel should be placed with household trash. They are not recyclable.
• Be sure to remove all other packing materials from within the boxes. No Styrofoam, no twist ties or wires, no screws or plastic bolts, no plastic bags, no air/puff packing
List of acceptable items to sort, recycle:
•Greeting cards envelopes, gift tags
•Wrapping paper (no foil paper)
•Corrugated and boxboard boxes
• Corrugated corner protectors
• Gift bags (remove plastic handles)
• Christmas trees (with lights, ornaments and tinsel removed)
• Wreaths and evergreen boughs (with lights, ornaments and bows removed)
