Margaret W. Johnson, obituary
SOUTH THOMASTON — Margaret Whitney Johnson, 88, passed away peacefully April 12, 2013, at Pen Bay Medical Center in Rockport. Moving to Maine from her home state of Massachusetts, she has been a South Thomaston resident for more than 30 years.
She was born in Newton, Mass., the daughter of John Farley Whitney and Carol Tippett. She was one of three children. Her sister, Elizabeth Hynes (1991) and her brother, John Farley Whitney Jr. (2012), pre-deceased her.
Right after World War II, Margaret married her handsome naval officer beau, Murdoch Matheson Johnson II, and they began their life together in Massachusetts, where Murdoch took over ownership of United Laundries, the largest commercial laundry in the Northeast at the time. They enjoyed more than 60 years of marriage, sadly ending in 2005 when Murdoch passed away from prostate cancer.
Margaret and Murdoch had three children. Margaret is survived by two of them: Murdoch Matheson Johnson III and his wife, Patrice, and Richard Whitney Johnson. Her daughter, Susan Johnson Rutherfurd, died in 1995 of cancer.
Margaret is also survived by four grandchildren, John Whitney Rutherfurd, Annan Rutherfurd, Murdoch Matheson Johnson IV and Louisa Bouvier Johnson. One of her grandchildren, Jack Johnson, passed away in 2005.
Three great grandchildren, Teagan Foley-Rutherfurd, Kalei Foley-Rutherfurd, and Murdoch Matheson Johnson V, also survive her.
She was a communicant of St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Camden.
Margaret (or "Peg" as she was fondly called) loved life, fast cars, going out to lunch (or dinner or breakfast), wildlife and wild animals, hanging clothes out to dry on a summer day, her devoted friends, her church and her beloved family. Dearly loved, she will be greatly missed.
A memorial service will be held at St. Thomas Church in Camden in September and will be announced.
Condolences may be shared with the Johnson family by visiting their book of memories at www.longfuneralhomecamden.com.
Arrangements are with Long Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Camden.
