Lincolnville woman charged after striking pedestrian in Camden crosswalk

CAMDEN — A Scarborough woman was taken to Pen Bay Medical Center around noon Monday after being struck by a car while she was walking in a crosswalk in downtown Camden.
Camden police responded Monday just after noon on July 20 to the accident, which occurred at the intersection of Washington and Mechanic streets.
According to Camden Lt. Mike Geary, 71-year-old Berylann Johnson of Lincolnville was making a left turn from Mechanic Street onto Washington Street when she struck 58-year-old Robin Pietila of Scarborough. Pietila was walking across Washington Street from the hair salon toward the Knox Mill when she was hit, spun around and knocked to the ground, according to Geary.
Johnson was driving a 2010 Honda Accord.
"She was complaining of leg pain and there was visible bruising," said Geary.
Johnson was uninjured, but was shook up, he said.
Geary summonsed Johnson for failure to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk. He said that Johnson told him she didn't see Pietila crossing the road.
Camden firefighters assisted with traffic at the scene and a North East Mobile Health Services ambulance crew assessed and transported Pietila to the hospital.
Nearly a year ago, on July 31, 2014, another pedestrian was struck and sustained more serious injuries at the same intersection. In that incident, the driver, in a large sport utility vehicle, was also turning left from Mechanic onto Washington Street, but the pedestrian was not in the crosswalk.
