Joan Darling Hopps, obituary
CAMDEN — Joan Darling Hopps, 84, formerly of Rowayton, Conn., and most recently of Quarry Hill in Camden, died at Quarry Hill May 5. Daughter of the late Lewis and Klara Frances Hopps, she was born in Stamford, Conn., and grew up with her family in the home of her great-grandparents on Five Mile River in Darien, Conn. She attended Whittier College in California, and graduated from Norwalk Community College in Connecticut.
Joan lived in New York City, Miami, Fla., and Westport, Conn., and then for 20 years lived at Hilltop Homes in Rowayton, overlooking the river of her childhood. Early in her working years she was on staff of the then-new Guggenheim Museum in New York City. Later she spent most of her career in the travel business. She sang in the Choral Society in Greenwich, Conn., and in Gilbert and Sullivan operas with the Darien Troupers. She was an active member of the Unitarian Universalist Church at Westport, Conn.
Close to her family, especially her niece and nephews, she took them to Disneyland, the New York Worlds Fair and the theater in New York City.
She is survived by her brother, Thomas Darling Hopps and his wife, Ann Burgess Ford Hopps, of Camden; her niece, Robin Elizabeth Hopps and her wife, Wendy Sue Harper, of Monkton Ridge, Vt.,; her nephews, Frederic Lews Hopps and his wife, Jette, and their daughters, Inge, Kaja and Sara, all of Beverly, Mass., Jonathan Shaw Hopps and his wife, Tory, and their children, Sawyer and Caroline, all of Cumberland, and Douglas William Hopps and his daughter, Burdena, of Bristol, Vt.
Her family will gather soon for a memorial service celebrating her life.
