Injured woman helped off Rockland Breakwater Monday

ROCKLAND — Emergency personnel with Rockland Fire and EMS were called to Rockland Breakwater at the end of Samoset Road Monday for a report of an injured woman.
Rockland Asst. Fire Chief Ken Elwell said the unidentified woman, in her 60s, fell on the breakwater around 12:30 p.m. and sustained a cut to her head.
"She was about three-quarters of the way to the lighthouse out on the breakwater," said Elwell. "
The breakwater is 7/8 of a mile long and constructed of large blocks of granite in varying sizes and shapes, making for uneven terrain in places that trips up young and old, year after year. But it's a favorite place to walk for tourists and locals alike, providing scenic views of Rockland Harbor, Owls Head Light, the islands of Vinalhaven and North Haven and passing boats, including ferries, Coast Guard vessels, lobster boats, and schooners, among others.
Elwell said a group of emergency responders made the trek out to where the woman was sitting and waiting on the breakwater, and brought out a litter with them in case she needed to be carried out.
"We went out and she was able to walk out on her own power, with our assistance," said Elwell. "She was then transported to Pen Bay Medical Center but her injuries were not serious."
