Hope crash sends one to hospital
HOPE — A one-vehicle crash on Route 17 near the former chemical plant resulted in an ambulance transfer to Pen Bay Medical Center.
The crash occurred around 3 p.m., when a Land Rover veered off the road, flipped over twice, and came to rest after ripping through a chain link fence that demarcated the superfund site of the former Union Chemical Co.
The driver, alone in the vehicle, was heading east, according to Hope Fire Chief Clarence Keller, and reportedly fell asleep at the wheel.
Hope firefighters responded to the scene, along with North East Mobile Health Services.
Traffic was reduced to one lane while firefighters cleaned the highway and the driver was taken to the hospital.
