‘Forever Home’ renovation project kicks off at P.A.W.S. as capital fundraising continues
CAMDEN — In less than a week the “Forever Home” capital renovation project moved quickly from day one of demolition to first day of framing at P.A.W.S. Animal Adoption Center’s new site in Camden (see photos). The huge garage bay doors that identified the former ambulance facility on John Street are gone and most of the first floor has been gutted to make way for intake rooms, treatment and care facilities for homeless dogs and cats in the Midcoast region.
According to P.A.W.S.’ executive director Amie Hutchison and general contractor Tom Albertson, renovations are expected to be completed in late October, more than tripling square footage from current quarters on Camden Street in Rockport. Interior framing is moving ahead smoothly. P.A.W.S. is two-thirds of the way towards its $1.1 million goal and fundraising will continue throughout the renovation. The project is the first capital effort for P.A.W.S. since completion of the Kislak Dog Park in 2012 adjacent to the current center. The popular park will remain a key element in the expanded services P.A.W.S. will offer residents in its nine-town service area.
Although the sounds of jackhammers and saws filter up to the administrative offices on the second floor, “it’s the sound of our dream becoming a reality and we love that,” says Hutchison.
