NAPLES, Florida — Florence Carolyn (Mullen) Metzger, 93, loving mother, sister and friend to many, passed peacefully into heaven, Thursday, April 16, 2020.

Born in Vineland, New Jersey, December 6, 1926, she was the daughter of Isaac T. and Annabelle Glover Mullen. She graduated from Vineland High School at 16 years of age, going on to earn a BA in Elementary Education from Beaver College in PA. She taught in Trenton and Bloomfield, New Jersey public schools.

July 29, 1949, she married Frederick “Bud” Metzger. They lived in East Orange, moving to Bloomfield, then West Orange before settling in Livingston, New Jersey where they reared their six children.

Florence loved studying the Bible and attending Bible studies all her life. She was a member of Grace Orthodox Presbyterian Church in Westfield, NJ, Lakeview Orthodox Presbyterian Church in Rockport, ME and Covenant Presbyterian Church in Naples, FL. She was a beloved teacher to hundreds of students and enjoyed the final years of her teaching career as a 1st grade aide in her daughter Pam’s classroom in Durham, NC.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bud Metzger; son Craig, and her siblings Ruth, Joe, Woodrow, Hop, Mary, Whitney, Jane and Tom.

She is survived by her brother, Roy Mullen of Vienna, Virginia; her six children: Frederick Metzger of Parsippany, New Jersey, Ruth Vlaardingerbroek (Rudy) of Naples, Florida, Gary Metzger (Carol) of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, Nancy Moriarty (Michael) of Edgewater, Maryland, Pam Holland of Owls Head, Maine, and Cindy Phillips (Stephen) of Lookout Mtn, Georgia; grandchildren Kevin (Lindsey) Vlaardingerbroek, Matthew (Morganne) Vlaardingerbroek, Jody (Vinnie) Spera, Andrew (Becky) Moriarty, James Moriarty, Lindsay (Dustin) Gardner, Jeff Holland, Kate (Parker) Swayze; and many great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at a later date due to COVID-19 restrictions.
