Car strikes Appleton woman in fire department lot
APPLETON — An Appleton woman was taken to Portland from Pen Bay Medical Center Saturday afternoon after she was struck by a vehicle in the Appleton Fire Department's parking lot around 1:30 p.m.
Maine State Police Sgt. Pat Hood said that Kristi Dodd of Hope had been at a rabies clinic at the Appleton Town Office Saturday before getting into her vehicle to leave. Dodd, 37, was driving a Chrysler minivan and backing out of a parking space when she failed to see 60-year-old Marion Madddocks of Appleton on foot, exiting her car.
Hood said it did not appear that Maddocks was run over by the van's tire when she was struck, though she did suffer an open fracture to her femur, and possibly other injuries, including to her arm.
"Marion is handicapped, uses canes to walk, and she was hunched over a bit, making her hard to see," said Hood. "Kristi did everything right, she was backing at a reasonable speed and using caution and there was no intent to cause injury. We believe that with the combination of salt on her back window and the victim's low stature, she just did not see her."
Hood said there were no drugs or alcohol involved, and that given the nature of the accident, no charges would be forthcoming.
"I have consulted with District Attorney's office and we will continue to watch things but right now, there are no charges," said Hood.
Hood sad firefighters who happened to be inside the fire station when the accident occurred came out and rendered aid until Union Ambulance arrived on scene to take Maddocks to the hospital. Due to the seriousness of the fracture, a call was made for a LifeFlight of Maine helicopter, but weather grounded the air ambulance. Hood said Union Amublance initially took Maddocks to PBMC, and then she was transferred to Maine Medical Center, where she would likely undergo treatment with an orthopedic surgeon.
