Camden woman injured in Rockport crash
An accident at Route 90 (West Street) and Meadow Street in Rockport sent a Camden woman to the hospital with a broken ankle and tied up traffic for about 45 minutes late Wednesday afternoon.

An accident at Route 90 (West Street) and Meadow Street in Rockport sent a Camden woman to the hospital with a broken ankle and tied up traffic for about 45 minutes late Wednesday afternoon.

ROCKPORT — Amy Hirakis, 55, of Camden, was taken to Pen Bay Medical Center Wednesday afternoon after she was injured and her car was totaled by a pickup truck at Meadow and West streets.
Rockport Officer Dana Smith was parked near a Meadow Street parking lot, just 200-feet from the intersection of Route 90 (West Street) when he heard what sound like an accident very nearby and looked up toward the noise.
"I heard the screeching tires, saw smoke and car parts flying up in the air toward the traffic light at Route 90," said Smith. "I didn't even get a chance to put on my seat belt before I was on scene to respond."
Smith said he called in the accident at 4:38 p.m.
He said Peter Twitchell, 32, of Warren, was driving a 2008 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck westbound on Route 90 when he crashed into Hirakis' 2000 BMW sedan, which had the green light on Meadow Street and proceeded north toward Port Harbor Marine.
"Witnesses said the truck went through the red light," said Smith.
The pickup truck collided with the crossing BMW, sending the sedan onto the lawn of the boat business. Smith said Hirakis sustained a broken ankle, among other injuries, and was complaining of chest pain from impact with the BWM's steering wheel. He said her side air bag deployed in the crash.
Due to her injuries and his being so close to the scene, Smith said he and bystanders helped stabilize Hirakis' broken ankle and other injuries while an ambulance and emergency medical services crew from North East Mobile Health was en route. Rockport Fire Department also responded to the crash to render aid.
Twitchell was uninjured, and his air bags deployed as well.
Both the truck and car were totaled in the crash and towed away by Camden Exxon. Smith said as of Wednesday night, no charges had been filed in the crash.
