Camden Police alert public of fundraising letter not endorsed by department
CAMDEN — Camden Police are sharing a copy of the front page of a solicitation letter from the Amercian Federation of Police and Concerned Citizens on their Facebook page. The letter, which many Camden residents are receiving through a direct mailing, asks them to send money to help out police officers injured or killed in the line of duty.
The organization states in the letter that it is a "special Camden area renewal appeal.” The Camden Police Department does not have anything to do with this solicitation, nor does the department endorse it in any way, according to their online post.
Police say that the federation is an actual organization, but their own research has shown that only approximately 15 percent of donations actually get to those who need it.
The department is not advising whether someone should or should not make a donation to the organization, only alerting the public that local police have nothing to do with this solicitation program. Additionally, police say citizens should also do their own research on the firm.
Police urge citizens to come forward with any solicitations if they feel it may be a scam. The department will check the solicitation for its authenticity.
