Camden firefighters, park and ambulance crews carry injured hiker from Camden Hills State Park
CAMDEN —A hiker slipped and injured his ankle Sept. 24 while hiking along the side of Megunticook Mountain, resulting in a lift down the mountain in a Stokes basket courtesy of the Camden Fire Department, two crews from North East Mobile Health Services and another crew working at the Camden Hills State Park.
The man, 60, was hiking with a group of visiting bicyclists when he apparently encountered a slick rock and fell, possibly fracturing an ankle, said Camden Fire Chief Chris Farley.
The hikers were approximately three-quarters of a mile up the Carriage Trail when the 10:35 a.m. call for help was made to Knox Regional Communication Center in Rockland.
Firefighters Andrew Lowe, Todd Anderson, Tracy Harford, John Ward, Clint Beverage, Jack Orestis and Farley, along with four employees of the state park and crews from two ambulances hiked in to the spot where the man had fallen.
A second ambulance was called when North East determined that a medic was needed to administer pain control.
North East then transported the injured hiker to Pen Bay Medical Center.
It was a busy late morning for local ambulance crews, as Rockland’s three ambulances were simultaneously on separate calls in the city, and Warren’s ambulance crew responded to the appeal for mutual aid and tended a injured resident at Quarry Hill in Camden.
