Both drivers, two taxi passengers injured in Belfast crash
BELFAST — Four people were treated for injuries following a two-vehicle accident near the busy intersection of routes 141 and 1 in Belfast Wednesday afternoon.
Sgt. Daniel Ftizpatrick of the Belfast Police Department said that Jenny Orcutt, 31, of Searsport, was traveling on Route 141 toward the intersection, when, according to witnesses on scene, it did not appear she was going to stop.
Before reaching the intersection, Orcutt’s Ford sedan veered off the side of the road and traveled across a residential lawn. Orcutt’s vehicle then crossed the southbound lane of Route 1, before side-swiping a Belfast Bay Area Taxi van.
“In my opinion the taxi driver saw [the oncoming sedan] at the last moment and tried to swerve,” said Fitzpatrick, who believes the reorientation of the vehicle may have stopped a head-on or t-bone collision.
The reason for the accident has not yet been released, as the investigation is ongoing, although Fitzpatrick acknowledged Orcutt was behaving strangely when police arrived and first responders arrived on scene.
“She was singing and talking in hymns when [emergency services] arrived,” Fitzpatrick said.
While all four occupants were transported to Waldo County General Hospital for treatment, there were no life-threatening injuries, said Fitzpatrick. Orcutt received the most substantial injuries, including a broken nose and head trauma from the impact.
The Belfast Bay Taxi van was totaled, and Orcutt’s vehicle is also likely totaled.
