Belfast police seek return of stolen electronic speed radar display
BELFAST — The Belfast Police Department is looking for its portable, electronic speed radar board that went missing from Doak Road sometime last weekend.
Police Chief Mike McFadden said the sign was placed alongside the road May 31, and that it displays the speed of oncoming vehicles to alert drivers how fast they are traveling. The sign retails for "several thousand dollars," said McFadden.
Police noticed the speed board was missing two days later, on Sunday, and have been unable to utilize the unit's GPS due to technical difficulties.
"It's not a situation where whoever took it is going to be able to destroy an SD card or tamper with it to ensure we can't get the information," McFadden said. He added that he is not particularly concerned about whether they will be able to determine who took it.
"It takes photos whenever it's tampered with, and those pictures are uploaded to a website. The problem is that the technical support for the website where [we] access the information has not been able to be accessed yet," said McFadden.
But the issue with the website is temporary, and could be resolved with a day or two. Until then, McFadden asked that the device be returned undamaged.
"If whoever took it doesn't want to return it, we'll find it," said McFadden.
