Camden Snow Bowl access road to close for construction project
CAMDEN — Beginning Monday, Sept. 14, the access road to the Camden Snow Bowl parking lot and Hosmer Pond boat launch will be closed to all traffic.
Contractors are due to begin a project to remove two failing culverts under the access road that allows Hosmer Brook to flow into Hosmer Pond.
During heavy rains and spring thaws, the culverts can become overwhelmed with water. The runoff then overtops the culverts and breaches the banks of the brook, flooding the boat launch parking lots and the furthest ends of the ballfields.
The project is due to take about 10 days to complete. In addition to installing the new culverts, the access road will repaved from Barnestown Road to the edge of the Snow Bowl parking lot.
From Sept. 14 to Sept. 23, the access road will be closed from the tennis court parking lot to the lodge.
Snow Bowl staff, contractors and the public will have to park in the tennis court lot and walk across the top of the ballfield to the bridge to access the lodge, maintenance building, and hiking and biking trails.
The $145,000 project is offset by a $95,000 Maine DEP Stream Crossing grant to replace the two failing culverts with a fish and wildlife friendly open-bottom culvert. These structures promote the natural movements of fish and wildlife and normal stream processes that support healthy habitat in a diversity of flow conditions.
