Vinalhaven first responder crashes en route to crash
VINALHAVEN — A Vinalhaven ambulance crewmember lost control of her sport utility vehicle and crashed into a tree Saturday night while responding to the scene of an accident minutes earlier on Calderwood Neck Road.
The initial accident involved Carl Gross, 48, of Vinalhaven, who was driving a 2012 Dodge truck around 7 p.m. Feb. 16. Knox County Sheriff's Deputy Rob Potter investigated the accident, and determined that Gross was driving too fast, given the slippery road conditions, when he lost control and crashed into a tree.
Passengers in Gross' truck, including Karena York, 37, and one of two 16-year-olds, were transported off the island to Pen Bay Medical Center withcomplaints of head and back pain. Gross and the other juvenile were not injured.
Shortly after the call about the truck crash on Calderwood Neck Road, emergency responders were called to North Haven Road, where ambulance crewmember Denise Hopkins, 45, had also slid off the road and crashed into a tree.
Chief Deputy Tim Carroll said Hopkins was driving a 2010 GMC Acadia SUV toward the earlier accident scene when she drove around a corner and began to slide. An overcorrection caused the vehicle to slide off the road into a ditch, where it hit a tree on the driver's side causing substantial damage to the side and rear axle.
Hopkins was checked at the scene by ambulance personnel and released, according to Carroll.
