Route 17 crash causes injuries, brief road detour

ROCKPORT — Emergency responders from Hope, Rockport, Union and Camden were on the scene of a head-on crash on Route 17 Monday afternoon, near Grassy Pond.
According to reports, a Honda sedan was traveling east on Route 17, toward Rockport, when the driver lost control of the car coming down a hill and slid into the path of an oncoming Toyota van. There were at least two people in the van and one in the sedan.
Union Ambulance and Camden First Aid were called to the scene for a report of three injuries. Camden Access was also initially called, but canceled as firefighters and other rescuers began arriving on scene and determined nobody was trapped inside either vehicle.
Snow began falling again in the Midcoast around 11:30 a.m., and the conditions on Route 17 are said to be a 1/2-inch of slippery slush. In addition to deteriorated road conditions, at least one police officer on scene noted bald tires on the Honda.
Just before 4 p.m. Northport and Belfast first responders were called to a four-car crash on Route 1 (Atlantic Avenue), near The Outdoor Sportsman store. According to a witness, one car hit a patch of ice and lost control, with three other cars becoming involved in the crash.
"The roads are really bad right now and I barely avoided the crash," said Terri Mahoney of Northport.
