Rockport horse killed in car accident
ROCKPORT — A 32-year-old horse was killed on Park Street in Rockport Monday night, according to Rockport Police Officer Dana Smith.
Friday, a gelding owned by Pam Spear, had somehow gotten out of a roadside fence around the farm adjacent to Goose River Golf Course around 7 p.m. and wandered onto Park Street.
"He was walking in the middle of the road, back toward the house, probably headed to the barn," said Smith.
Smith said Sheila Kennedy, 50, of Rockland, was traveling down Simonton Road from Camden (which becomes Park Street at the Rockport line), headed toward Main Street when she encountered the dark-colored horse. Kennedy was driving a 2003 Nissan Xterra.
"She said she was unable to avoid impact with the horse," said Smith.
Friday had to be put down by a vet, due to extensive internal injuries. A tow truck was summoned to help move the heavy animal from the middle of the road, while traffic was diverted around the scene, which took about 90 minutes to clear.
