Sandy roads, speed likely cause of Lincolnville accident
LINCOLNVILLE — A woman and her daughter were able to climb out of the rear hatch of a Nissan Pathfinder Monday afternoon after the vehicle slid off the road and onto its side, coming to a rest against a tree.
Jenny Jones, of Lincolnville, was driving east along the Heal Road just after noon Jan. 21 in the 2004 Pathfinder when she encountered a sharp curve in the road at the intersection of Proctor Road. Jones failed to make the curve, crossed the centerline into the opposite side of the road, slid into a ditch, and hit a tree.
All the airbags deployed, said Waldo County Sheriff's Deputy Jordan Tozier.
Both Jones and her eight-year-old daughter were transported by Camden First Aid Association to Waldo County General Hospital in Belfast with minor injuries.
"They were very fortunate," said Tozier.
The Pathfinder was totaled, with most of the damage to the left side of the vehicle.
Tozier attributed the accident to the presence of sand and gravel on the tar, and speed.
"She was probably going a little fast for the road conditions," he said.
Jones and her daughter were wearing their seatbelts. A citizen stopped to help Jones and call for emergency responders. Lincolnville Fire Department responded to the accident, along with Camden First Aid and Waldo County Sheriff's Office.
