Lincolnville businesswoman donates Rockport land to Penobscot Bay Regional Chamber of Commerce
ROCKPORT — A 1.5-acre parcel of land, along with a small home at the corner of routes 90 and 1 in Rockport, is now in the hands of the Penobscot Bay Regional Chamber of Commerce. The land was donated by Green House LLC, a company owned by Bettina Doulton, of Lincolnville. The property transfer occurred Dec. 29, 2014.
Doulton also donated another 4.15 acres of land behind the house, which extends up the hill. That land was formally under ownership of Not To Worry LLC. Doulton had acquired the properties in 2008.
“We are very excited,” said chamber Director Staci Coomer. “These things don’t happen every day.”
The chamber voted to accept the donation of land in October at a regularly scheduled meeting.
“We worked with her before, and she had inquired if we wanted it,” said Coomer, Jan. 5.
The chamber said it will continue to operate from both office and visitor centers at the Rockland Harbor and at Camden’s public landing. In Rockland, the chamber rents the waterfront offices for $2,000 a month. In Camden, the town allows the chamber to operate on the landing rent-free.
Chamber board president, Mike Hall, said in a news release Jan. 5 that the chamber committee is looking at what it could do with the new property.
“The chamber board is pleased to accept this donation,” said Mike Hall, PBRCC board president, in a news release. “We do not take a donation like this lightly and have appointed a committee to review possible uses for this space.”
The chamber said it will take a year to figure out what to do with the house and land.
“We will look at it over the course of the next year,” said Coomer. “At this point, we would like to figure out what goals we would like to establish.”
The property is strategic, sitting at the corner of routes 90 and 1. The house, a small cape, is thought to have been built around 1850, and it has been a residence since then. It is assessed at $49,900.
The 1.5 acres it sits on, and which abuts routes 1 and 90, is assessed at $106,900.
The parcel behind is assessed at $94,800. It has an access road from Route 90, and it consists of ledge that extends up a small hill.
Across Route 1 is the Cellar Door Winery’s retail shop, owned by Doulton. And across Route 90 is the Market Basket, a popular delicatessen. And kitty-corner is the lot that was formerly home to Rockport Elementary School, and is now owned by the town of Rockport.
The chamber committee has already met to look at the donated property. The committee consists of Mark Curtis, Dragon Cement; Vera Roberts, Camden National Bank; and Sandy Cox, New England Real Estate.
Formed on Aug. 1, 2011 through the consolidation of the Camden-Rockport-Lincolnville Chamber and the Rockland-Thomaston Area Chamber, the Penobscot Bay Regional Chamber of Commerce is the third largest chamber in the state of Maine.
