Lincolnville flocked by flamingoes
A rare flamboyance of flamingoes settled in Lincolnville, at the town office, courtesy of the Waldoboro Fire Department. "You've been flocked," is what that town said.
"I just thought they were congregating there while migrating south, like half the population of Lincolnville does every year," said Lincolnville Town Administrator David Kinney. "Maybe they were looking to hitch a ride."
Kinney received a letter from the pranksters, allowing that that flamingos would be moving in a few days to another "friend's" yard.
"A friend of the Waldoboro Fire Department has paid for you to be flocked by our flamingos," the letter said. "The flamingos will be visiting your lawn for a couple of days, and then move to another friend's home."
Paul Smeltzer, Waldoboro fire chief, said the department is raising money for its 175th anniversary celebration scheduled for a weekend in 2013.
To contribute to the celebration fund, and perhaps flock a yard, call the town office at 832-5369, or the fire department at 832-2161, or email fire@waldoboromaine.org.
According to the fire department: "Anyone can have a friend or neighbor ‘flocked’ for the $20 donation and the fire department will move in its three dozen pink flamingos to the unsuspecting lawn, along with an explanatory sign and a note on the door. They stay there for couple days, then move on to the next house. These poor flamingos have been flying non-stop since the promotion started."
