We remember
There is a simple Callery pear tree that survived the Sept. 11 attacks on the Twin Towers in New York City. It was discovered in the rubble – shocked, torn, blackened – like much of what we were on that bright clear morning of Sept. 11, 2001.
It was transported to the Bronx, cared for, and then replanted at Ground Zero. Last spring, the tree was reported to be 30 feet tall and growing. And blossoming.
Today, as we fall fully into pear season in Maine, we won't shake our memories of 9.11 and nor should we. We will remember every moment, every cry, every reaching hand. And we will find hope in a pear tree.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg was quoted as calling the tree a testament to New York's "ability to endure and a symbol of our unshakeable belief in a brighter future." It is a testament to the country's ability to do the same.
