Heavenly Threads thrift shop hires manager
CAMDEN — James Cook has been hired as manager of Heavenly Threads Thrift Shop, at The First Congregational Church of Camden. Cook commenced his duties on May 8.
As manager, Cook is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the thrift shop, managing the volunteers who staff the shop, and working in collaboration with church staff and lay leaders who oversee the related missions of the church, including the SOS Room and the Shields Fund.
Cook recently retired from a twenty-five year career in academia, having utilized his PhD in Sociology as a professor at Duke University and the University of Maine at Augusta. In his free time, James enjoys chairing the Midcoast Community Chorus, working with local social advocacy organizations, and participating in community theater.
The prospect of meshing his passion for social justice with meaningful employment drew him to apply for the position.
“Working with volunteers and weaving together threads of giving and community is a joy," said Cook. "I have deep respect for all that has been accomplished here, and I look forward to building upon the fine reputation that Heavenly Threads enjoys in the Camden area.”
Cook and family moved to Maine in 2009, after living all over the country. It didn’t take long for them to declare Camden their “forever home.” Cook and his wife Tracy, a healthcare professional, have two grown children who were both raised in this community. James and Tracy love gardening, hiking, and exploring the shore by paddleboard.
Since 1994, the Heavenly Threads Thrift Shop has accepted donations of gently used, quality home goods and clothing to resell at reasonable prices. Heavenly Threads is a ministry of the First Congregational Church of Camden. Proceeds, after operating expenses, are used to help individuals and non-profit organizations throughout Knox County and Lincolnville.
Visit the shop, located at 57 Elm Street, Camden. Currently, the store is open for shopping on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Donations are accepted in person on Tuesdays from 8 am to 12 pm and on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 9 am to 4 pm.
