‘Distracted driving’ causes rear-end crash in Rockport

ROCKPORT — The distracted driver of a sport utility vehicle that rear-ended a car on Route 1 in Rockport Monday morning totaled her vehicle and was taken to the hospital with back and neck pain, according to Rockport police.
Rockport Sgt. Travis Ford said that Sabrina Tyler, 20, of South Thomaston crashed into the back of Sharon Hobson's 2005 VW Passat just before 10 a.m. Nov. 18. Hobson, 62, of Rockland, was traveling north on Route 1 and was slowing to turn left into Rockport Automotive when she was struck from behind.
Hobson was able to drive her car, which sustained a broken back window and dented rear bumper, off Route 1 and onto the auto repair company's property after the crash. Tyler wasn’t so lucky, as her 2006 Chevrolet Equinox was totaled in the crash and had to be towed from the scene by Camden Exxon.
Rockport Fire Department responded to the scene along with two North East Mobile Health Services ambulances, with one of them transporting Tyler to Pen Bay Medical Center to be checked out.
Hobson sustained an injury to her hand, which Ford said he thought occurred when Hobson hit it on the steering wheel in the crash. Hobson denied medical treatment at the scene, said Ford.
A pickup truck and a Brinks security truck that were stopped at the scene of the crash, were not involved, said Ford. He also said that no summonses were issued.
"Everybody around the county seems to be having a ton of [distracted driving accidents], especially over the past 1-1/2 to two years," said Ford. "Especially on Route 1, if you look away for just a few seconds, someone in front of you is bound to slow down or stop and wham, that's it. I have also seen many calls for cars off the road, with no other vehicles involved, and those are often distracted drivers who have drifted off the road and lost control."
