"This morning, prior to the start of first period approximately 90 students gathered in the MVHS cafeteria to show their support for the MSAD 40 teachers who are involved in contact negotiations with the MSAD 40 School Board.
"After the first period bell rang the students remained in the cafeteria. The school principal, Mr. Harold Wilson, addressed the students and explained that he understood their concerns, and he would be willing to answer any questions. After Mr. Wilson answered several questions, the MVEA (teacher’s union) president, Mr. Paul Forest, offered to speak with the students. Mr. Forest told the group he appreciated their support but that none of the teachers wanted the students to violate the school rules. Mr. Forest explained there were more appropriate ways for students to make their voices heard including having a conversation with their parents or perhaps writing a letter to the school board. Mr. Forest and Mr. Wilson then asked the students to report to class and the majority of students left the cafeteria and went to class.
"A smaller group of students remained in the cafeteria. These students were given a second opportunity to ask Mr. Wilson additional questions and offer some comments. Another teacher, Mrs. Anderson addressed the group, took some questions and then asked the students to please go to class. Several more students left the group and went to their assigned class.
"Mr. Wilson told the remaining group of students if they did not return to class, they would be suspended from school. All of the students were given the opportunity to leave the cafeteria and those who refused were suspended for the day. The parents were contacted and the suspended students were sent home."
