Flags to fly at half-staff July 23
Flags in the state are to fly at half-staff Tuesday, July 23 in honor of retired U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice John Paul Stevens, who passed at 99 on July 17.
President Donald Trump issued a proclamation on July 17 for U.S. flags to fly at half-staff until sunset on the day of interment, which will be July 23.
“As a mark of respect for the memory and longstanding service of John Paul Stevens, retired Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, I hereby order, by the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, that on the day of his interment, the flag of the United States shall be flown at half‑staff at the White House and upon all public buildings and grounds,” President Trump said.
Governor Janet Mills later directed State of Maine flags be flown at half-staff in honor of Justice Stevens.
"Justice John Paul Stevens spent his life in service to our nation, faithfully defending our liberty both in battle and on the bench,” Gov. Mills said in a statement. “In recognition and gratitude for his extraordinary public service, I ask the people of Maine to join me in honoring the life and legacy of Justice Stevens and offering our condolences to his family as he is laid to rest."
Justice Stevens, nominated by President Gerald Ford, served on the bench of the nation’s highest court from December 1975 until his retirement in June 2010.
