More than 90 auction items donated for Justin Hills fundraiser Saturday
LINCOLNVILLE — It's almost time for the Super Chicken Barbecue at the Lincolnville Fire Station and volunteers are busy putting the finishing touches on what is shaping up to be a super fundraiser for well-known and much-respected emergency first aid responder Justin Hills of Lincolnville.
Hills, a licensed paramedic for the past six years, has been with Camden First Aid Association for a dozen years. He has also served on the Camden and Rockland police departments, and is a Lincolnville firefighter. Hills is one of the Camden First Aid responders you want to see when you're in rough shape and in need of transport to a hospital. When there is a particularly large patient, or an unruly or combative one, Hills' 6-foot 7-inch, 300 pound-frame can come in handy both for his strength and the intimidation factor. And he's also great with kids and seniors, from what we hear around town.
But this time around, Hills is the one who's been spending time on gurneys and in hospital rooms, hooked up to IVs and monitoring equipment as he is battling Hodgkin's lymphoma, a cancer of lymph tissue. His cancer was first discovered in his neck last fall, and he began chemotherapy in September 2012. After the near year, underwent further treatment via radiation therapy to try and knock out some stubborn spots in his neck that the chemotherapy didn't eradicate.
So far, his diagnosis of a "curable" kind of cancer has held true, and he's back to work, albeit when he's not in treatment and his health and stamina allow it. During the course of his journey, though, he's accumulated a fair amount of medical bills, including costs for things medical insurance does not cover.
And that's where his co-workers, friends and community are stepping in, to raise money and help the man who has done a lot to help his community. When he's not driving an ambulance, working in the back of one on a patient or providing some muscle to lift an injured or sick resident, he likes to spend his time teaching up and coming emergency medical services individuals, as well as those taking CPR and other first aid courses through any number of venues.
"For me, Saturday's benefit is not as much about the money as it is having a party and seeing all my friends and neighbors," said Hills. "I'm really looking forward to that."
Volunteers have been meeting for the past two months, planning the party that will include barbecuing 150 chickens to produce 300 half-chicken servings. Potato and pasta salad have been ordered and a big batch of Neal Peabody's famous sauce has been procured to slather on the roasting chickens. The committee is asking anyone interested in helping with the feast to bring a dessert of their choice on a disposable serving plate or dish.
In the past month, scores of individuals, businesses and organizations have ponied up myriad creative donations for both the silent and live auctions, the latter of which will get underway with auctioneer Rosey Gerry on the mic (as if he needed one!).
The Super Chicken Barbecue starts at high noon — rain, snow or shine — and the minimum donation is $10 a plate. Dinner includes a half-chicken, potato and pasta salads, chips, bread and a beverage. The silent auction currently includes nearly 50 items and the live auction will be capped around 40 items.
Come early and bid often, as there's a ton of great stuff to win. Cash or check only. The live auction gets underway at 2 p.m. and there are also Super Chicken T-shirts for sale, with all proceeds being donated to Justin Hills.
A complete list of auction items to date follows. Auction donations can be made until noon Friday, March 22, by calling Lincolnville Fire Chief Jason Peasley at 446-8620 or email jpeaseley@gmail.com. Donations can also be dropped off at Camden First Aid, located at 123 John St. in Camden.
