Midcoast under winter storm watch

GRAY — With the storm still a day away, the Midcoast is now under a winter storm watch and a winter storm warning has been issued for inland portions of the state north to Jackman and Skowhegan.
According to the National Weather Service, the major winter storm that has been affecting the Plains and Middle Mississippi Valley is forecast to move northeast into the Great Lakes today. A second area of low pressure will also begin to develop along the Middle Atlantic coast Tuesday night, and slowly make its way into southern New England by Wednesday evening.
A large swath of heavy snow will lift north ahead of that low, reaching New Hampshire Wednesday morning and western Maine Wednesday afternoon. Overnight snow Wednesday could fall heavy at times, especially in areas just southeast of the mountains, where snowfall rates will be more intense.
Northern Maine will see less snow, while the coast will see a mix or change-over to rain due to warmer marine air moving inland with the storm. But the NWS is currently predicting that cold air north of Portland may hang on long enough to produce up to 6 inches of heavy, wet snow.
As it has had to do with other recent storms, the NWS is hedging on committing Tuesday to predicting more than the current snow amounts for the coast due to the uncertainty of the track of this storm.
As of 4 a.m. Feb. 26, a winter storm watch is in effect from Wednesday morning through Thursday afternoon. The watch is for the mountains of western Maine and northern New Hampshire, interior southeast New Hampshire and coastal Maine north of Portland.
Snow accumulations of 4 to 8 inches of wet snow are forecast, with a mix or change to rain along the coast. Winds will be east at 10 to 20 mph with gusts up to 30 mph and visibilities 1/2-mile or less at times.
Temperatures will be in the upper 20s in the mountains and in the low to mid 30s along the coast.
