Friendship Trap employee struck by van on Cushing Road
FRIENDSHIP — A Friendship Trap employee told police he darted back across the road without looking, and then slipped and fell into the path of an oncoming Toyota van.
The accident occurred around 10:15 Monday morning, near the business located on Route 97 (Cushing Road). According to Knox County Chief Deputy Tim Carroll, 19-year-old Samuel Wadsworth of Union had gotten out of his vehicle to run back across the road to Friendship Trap Company when he ran in front of a passing 2003 Toyota Sienna van.
The van was being driven by Michelle White, 45, of Friendship. White told police she was unable to stop, and Wadsworth told police he tried to stop — but slipped and fell.
Carroll said Wadsworth sustained multiple bruises and lacerations, and was alert when emergency responders from Friendship Fire Department and Waldoboro Ambulance Service first arrived. Wadsworth was initially taken to Pen Bay Medical Center in Rockport and then later flown by a LifeFlight of Maine helicopter to Bangor for possible internal injuries.
Deputies Michael Sprague and Paul Spear responded and investigated the accident. A video provided by the trap-making and repair company showed the deputies that White attempted to stop with very little time, but due to road the slush and packed-snow road conditions, she was unable to avoid hitting Wadsworth.
Carroll said White was not injured and her van sustained very little damage.
