Memorial Day in Camden: Patriotism, and honoring those who died for their country
CAMDEN — It was a patriotic scene along Camden’s Memorial Day parade route May 28 with many people, especially children, waving American flags that were distributed by members of the War Memorial Post 30 American Legion.
The observance began at the Camden Public Landing with an honor guard rifle salute and a wreath tossed into the harbor for those lost at sea. The program ended with a solemn version of echo taps, played by two trumpet players from the Camden Hills Regional High School Band.
Retired Camden Police Lt. Ralph Knowlton, a veteran of both World War II and the Korean War, was the parade marshal. Knowlton traveled in a Camden Police cruiser which included stops for taps at the Conway Monument, Village Green and Harbor Park, and then the Mountain View Cemetery for a brief ceremony and wreath dedication, along with taps and another honor guard rifle salute.
It was a day to reflect, pause and remember the men and women who died during service to their country. It was also a day to take the opportunity to teach children what Memorial Day is really about.
