Waldo County grand jury indicts 34, one for sex crimes remains secret
BELFAST — A Waldo County grand jury completed its work Wednesday afternoon, handing down 35 indictments against 34 people. One of those indictments is for more than a dozen sex crimes, but the individual’s name is not being released pending their arrest.
Grand juries in Knox and Waldo counties meet quarterly, alternating every other month. Juries are usually picked over two or three days, and then those selected to sit on a grand jury spend on average three to four days hearing cases and making decisions on indictments. Grand jury indictments are required for cases to be dealt with in Superior Court, according to Waldo County Deputy District Attorney Eric Walker.
“I can’t proceed to superior court, for a felony, without an indictment,” said Walker. “In order to proceed to a jury trial, or to deal with a plea for a felony, we can’t do that without an indictment by a grand jury. Someone can be charged with a crime by complaint, but that’s not enough to get them before a jury for trial.”
