U-Turn for animal’s sake triggers vehicle accident
UNION — A motorcyclists was taken to a local hospital, Saturday morning, after driving into a car that was beginning a U-turn on Heald Highway, in Union.
According to the Knox County Sheriff’s Office, the driver of the car, Richard Whelan, 74, of Hope, was travelling westbound on Heald Hwy (Rt 17) when he allegedly decided to turn around and assist an animal that was attempting to cross the roadway.
Earl Reynolds, 65, of South Thomaston, operating a Harley Davidson, was following Whelan and was unable to stop his motorcycle as Whelan turned in front of him.
Reynold’s struck Whelan in the rear causing both vehicles to spin and Reynold’s to be thrown from his.
Whelan did not sustain injuries. Reynold’s was taken to a hospital for non-life threatening injuries. Both vehicles were towed due to damage.
The incident was investigated by Deputy Paul Spear. He was assisted by Knox Regional Communications, Union Fire, Union Rescue, All Directions and Hometown Towing.
