Storming Tuesday: ‘Fifty foot seas and alligators everywhere!’
MIDCOAST — A sudden and violent storm crossed from the west through a region that spanned Northport to Rockland, Owls Head and South Thomaston, downing a few trees and wires and sending drainage ditches into overload.
The thunderstorm caught the Midcoast by surprise, as heavy weather were predicted to possibly arrive after 3 p.m. But just before 2 p.m., gusty winds, hail and driving rain slowed traffic to a crawl along Route 1, and sent people huddling under eaves and inside for almost 30 minutes of raucous weather.
At the Camden Snow Bowl, large hail slammed on the lodge porch.
At Rockport Harbor, the Goose River ran so hard with heavy rain that the harbor turned brown with silt. As lightning struck and thunder rolled, boats filled with water.
“At one point, I could not see one boat in the harbor, it was raining so hard,” said Harbor Master Abbie Leonard.
The last lobster boat of the day returned safely to the commercial dock in Rockport Harbor after riding out the storm on Penobscot Bay. Mimosa eased in just as the sun came out with owner Matt Samuels reporting, “50 foot seas and alligators everywhere.”
As one storm ended, another was bearing down behind it from the west.
