ROCKLAND — Ruth Wyer Haines died early in the morning at her home Feb. 19, at the age of 92. Born in Lynn, Mass., to George and Margaret Price Wyer, Ruth grew up in Auburn, Maine, attended Edward Little High School and received a Bachelor of Arts from Bates College in Lewiston and a Master of Library Science degree from the University of Rhode Island. After graduation from Bates, she moved to Boston and worked as an assistant buyer at Filenes. Ruth met David Haines at Bates and they married in 1946.

Ruth raised her family in Canton, Mass., and was librarian at Canton High School for eight years and then at Wellesley High School for 15 years. During her years living in Canton, Ruth was a vital member of Trinity Church, a member of the Robinson Players and volunteered in many areas, including the PTA and American Cancer Society.

Ruth and Dave moved to Rockland in 1985. Rockland was a very welcoming community. Ruth took up golf for 10 years and played duplicate bridge two or three times a week until she turned 90. She was a volunteer at the Farnsworth Museum, a member of the AAUW, Penobscot Bay Hospital Auxiliary, Common Cause, and People for the American Way, and was an active member of St. John the Baptist Episcopal Church in Thomaston. Ruth was, until the very end of her life, an active participant in our democratic process. She worked at the polls for many years and shared her views on gun control, PAC money, the Gulf War, Supreme Court nominees, and environmental concerns to name a few, frequently via letters to every state representative, senator and the president.

She was gracious, intelligent, articulate, funny and an incredible mother. She will be sorely missed.

Pre-deceased by her husband of 58 years; a sister, Thelma Grady; and a brother, Arthur Wyer; Ruth is survived by her children, Linda, Kevin, Janet and Alan Haines; and her grandchildren, David and Samuel Rains, Andrew and Emily Britt, Zachary Haines and Maxwell Haines.

Funeral services were held Feb. 22 at St. John the Baptist Episcopal Church in Maine.
