OWLS HEAD — Linwood E. Aylward, 99, died peacefully, Tuesday, February 5, 2013 at Quarry Hill in Camden.

Born in Rockland, September 1, 1913, he was the son of Samuel and Myra Webber Aylward. Educated locally, he was a 1931 graduate of Rockland High School.

Following graduation, Mr. Aylward purchased a farm on Buttermilk Lane in South Thomaston with his parents. Together they operated it for 25 years. Over the years Linwood and his neighbors had a collaborative effort helping each other with all aspects of work on the neighboring farm lands.

A devoted and loving son, Linwood spent much of his life assisting his parents, and in later years caring for his father. Shortly before the sale of their farm, Linwood built a home in Owls Head, eventually moving there with his aging father.

Jackie McLain, Linwood's cousin, recalled her younger years on the farm. She said the many summers she spent there helped shape her as a person. She told of going on milk deliveries with Linwood each day, when she would often wait in the truck while he talked with customers. She remembered the delivery to Dr. Lawry's home always taking a little longer than she expected. It wasn't until later that she realized the delay was due to the fact that Linwood was courting Dr. Lawry's daughter, Dorothy.

Linwood's life really blossomed when he met and married Dorothy. Together they shared their love of history and travel, taking many trips to Italy, where they enjoyed wine tastings, as well as Egypt, Hawaii, the Caribbean, Spain and Ireland.

Following the sale of the family farm, Linwood kept busy lobstering off his own boat for fun, wood working and making intricate wood models. He loved to make boats and covered stage coaches with painstaking accuracy. His great-niece said he was a gifted and brilliant artist, however he was very humble about his abilities. She said he had many interests and was talented in each of them. For several years Linwood also worked as a draftsman for Bicknell Manufacturing in Rockland.

Predeceased by his wife, Dorothy, in 1983, Mr. Aylward is survived by his nephews, Dennis Aylward and his wife, Joyce, of Merriam, Kan. and Rev. Rex Garrett and his wife, Renée, of Bangor; his niece, Marlo Bradford and her husband, Ray, of Bangor; a second cousin, Jacqueline McLain of Rockland; a third cousin, Lucinda Feely of Rockland; several great-nieces and great-nephews, many cousins and a large extended family.

A celebration of Mr. Aylward's life was held Feb. 10, 2013, at Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home's 104 Limerock. Interment will take place in the spring at Sea View Cemetery in Rockland.
