Kendall grew up in Thomaston, where he attended local schools and was a 1963 graduate of Thomaston High School. Prior to being drafted into the U.S. Army, he worked as a carpenter with his uncle, George McLain, and at Petroski's Filling Station, both in Thomaston. The consummate outdoorsman, he was happiest when hunting, or riding his four-wheeler. He particularly enjoyed spending time with friends and family at camp in Greenfield. Woodworking, building and repairing guns, and daily visits with his buddies at Torpaka's Gun Shop, were other favorite pastimes for Kendall. He was also an avid reader.

He was a proud member of the Eye of the Hawk Muzzle Loaders, Knox County Fish and Game Association and the National Rifle Association.
Other than his parents, Kendall was pre-deceased by his father-in-law, Robert H. Fogarty in 1982; a nephew, Douglas Mairs in 1971; and a cousin, Newell "Sonny" McLain in 2007.
