Hiking, biking mishaps keep Camden firefighters in the woods, on assist

CAMDEN — A hiker who lost her bearings Tuesday evening close to the summit Megunticook Mountain was escorted back down the right trail by Camden Fire Chief Chris Farley and Firefighter Matt Heath.
A 911 call from the female hiker at 7:25 p.m. was received by Knox Regional Communications Center in Rockland dispatchers, who, in turn, contacted Farley. The hiker reported she was not injured, merely lost.
“She was hiking by herself, got disoriented wasn’t sure which way to go, so she called 911,” said Farley. “They called me and I called Matt; we went up and found her, and walked her out.”
The hiker was at the intersection of the Jack Williams and Ridge trails, just underneath the Megunticook summit, in the Camden Hills State Park.
“She did the right thing,” said Farley. “She didn’t know where she was. She tried to find her way around, kept going and going, and then went back to intersection.”
She had started hiking at 2:30 p.m., alone, up from the Maiden Cliff parking area on Route 52.
Farley and Heath spent approximately 90 minutes on the hiker assist.
It was a good hike, Farley reported, and along the way, they encountered a red bird with black wing markings (see photos). They are wondering what kind of bird it was.

On July 18, members of the Camden Fire Department were called to the Ridge Trail to help a woman, 60-plus, who fell and injured her wrist.
Assistant Fire Chief Andrew Lowe, accompanied by Clint Beveridge, Jack Orestis and Alex Davis, hiked 1.5 miles to the woman’s location and carried her out of the woods in a Stokes basket. Meanwhile, Rockport Fire Chief Jason Peasley, who lives in Lincolnville near a trail head, met the rescue crew with his ATV and transported the woman the rest of the way to a waiting ambulance.
And, on July 26, a mountain biker riding the Kuller Trail at the Camden Snow Bowl fell and injured his collar bone.
Assistant Fire Chief Lowe, with Beveridge, Matt Heath and Brandon and Ryan Graffam, also responded to that incident, helping as an employee of the Snow Bowl drove the injured biker down the hill on an ATV.
