Frozen pipe heat tape likely cause of South Thomaston house fire
South Thomaston — An electrical fire ignited by heat tape under a mobile home at 67 Dublin Road in South Thomaston resulted in extensive damage to the residence early Saturday evening.
The fire call came in at 5:11 p.m. and South Thomaston Fire Chief Bryan Calderwood said heat tape was being used on a frozen pipe under the house when the tenants reported light smoke in the residence.
"When we arrived, there was smoke in the house and light fire under the residence," said Calderwood.
The 1960s/1970s-era trailer, owned by Sam Atwood, sustained heavy fire, smoke, heat and water damage, according to Calderwood. The tenants, Zach Robbins and Amanda Cleary, were home at the time of the fire but were able to evacuated the home, uninjured, along with a dog.
Thomaston and St. George were called out for mutual aid and in total seven engines, one rescue sqaud and 17 firefighters responded.
"We had a quick knockdown under the house, but found fire in the walls and the floor," said Calderwood. "We then chased the fire during overhaul."
Calderwood said the home is unlivable now, and that Robbins and Cleary were planning to stay with family for the night. A pig in a pen in the backyward was uninjured.
The state Fire Marshal's Office was called, but given that the fire was a fairly simple electrical fire in nature, Calderwood said it was unlikely they would send an investigator.
"We will follow up with them on Monday," said Calderwood. "And come to think of it, this is the second time I have been to this trailer for a fire in 20 years. I think the last time it was electrical too, but I'm not sure 100 percent sure."
Firefighters cleared the scene around 7 p.m.
