Escaped prisoner found dead in Friendship
WARREN — Maine law enforcement officers' search for a Belfast man who reportedly walked away from the Bolduc Correctional Facility on Cushing Road in Warren Friday came to a tragic end Sunday; and it has been confirmed Wednesday that Brian Floyd committed suicide.
In an update Sunday around 1:30 p.m., Judy Plummer, spokeswoman for the Maine Department of Corrections, said that authorities received a tip early in the morning Sunday that Floyd, 21, was at a residence in Friendship. Upon arrival at the residence, Plummer said the body of a deceased man was found.
The state Medical Examiner confirmed Wednesay that Floyd took his own life, and that he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.
On Wednesday, Maine Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland said that Floyd entered the Friendship home through an unlocked door.
"It really surprises me that in this day, when there is a desperate escaped convict on the loose, a homeowner would leave their door unlocked," said McCausland.
McCausland said that the tip about Floyd's whereabouts came after he was discovered posting on Facebook from a computer inside the home.
"The homeowners were away for a wedding and we called them and told them to remain away until this was resolved," said McCausland.
Inside the residence, McCausland said Floyd found the homeowner's loaded weapon.
"There is no explanation as to why [he killed himself]," said McCausland. "He improvised some sort of silencer for the gun, and that's troubling, as to what his intentions really were."
A concerted effort to find Floyed had been ongoing by state, county and local police after he escaped from Bolduc late Friday evening, Sept. 21, at approximately 10 p.m., according to the DOC.
Bolduc is minimum security with an open perimeter and Floyd reportedly walked off the facility campus. A command center was set up at Maine State Prison, in Warren.
Floyd began serving a sentence for theft by unauthorized taking June 6, with a release date of May 22, 2015, with no probation.
Road blocks around the area had been set up Friday night into Saturday as police stopped vehicles.
According to the DOC, Bolduc "is to protect the public by providing a safe, healthy environment where prisoners are held to a high standard of conduct and are provided with opportunities for personal growth that allow them to return to society as productive citizens."
Buldoc has a population capacity of 222, with 65 staff members. It houses prisoners with fewer than five years remaining on their sentences.
