Rockland — Dr. George E. Lauterbach, 85, died peacefully Feb. 12, 2013, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born in Bushnell, Ill., June 1927, he was the eldest son of Edward and Helen Lauterbach. He grew up in southern Illinois, assisting his father with their local greenhouse and farming businesses. George received his bachelor's degree in organic chemistry from Monmouth College, where he met his beloved wife, Joan Elene Reinecke. They married in June 1949, just after he graduated from Monmouth College with honors. He then progressed in his scientific studies, obtaining a Masters of Science in biochemistry from Bradley University in 1953 and his Doctor of Philosophy in organic chemistry from Purdue University in 1958.

Dr. Lauterbach's career was highlighted by a number of academic and scientific achievements. He served as an associate professor of chemistry at the Institute of Paper Chemistry in Appleton, Wisc., and was an educator at several other academic institutions. He was promoted into positions of increasing responsibility in the paper and chemical industries, and was the author of several notable scientific publications. He also holds the rights to several chemistry patents.

The couple lived and raised their five children in the Midwest before relocating to the coast of Maine in 1978. He worked as a research chemist at Marine Colloids, a division of FMC Corporation in Rockland, until his retirement.

George enjoyed the great outdoors and was happiest when he could be camping, fishing, hunting, canoeing, or just enjoying the beauty of nature and wildlife with his family and friends. He also was an avid reader and developed an extensive library of historical and scientific novels. He was well known for his intellect, quick wit and compassion for others. He loved living by the ocean and was fascinated by the local shipbuilding industry and the boating events that this area attracts.

George is survived by his devoted wife, Joan Reinecke Lauterbach; and his children, Wayne Richard Lauterbach, Susan Lynn Kostas, Grant William Lauterbach and his wife, Lori, Lisa Marie Lauterbach, and Sandra Leigh Lauterbach. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Brian, Jennifer, Kristin, Tiffany, Erik, Blake, Ian and Caitlin; plus two great-grandchildren, Grace and Paige.

A celebration of George's life will be held in June 2013, when his wife, children and friends will celebrate George and Joan's wedding anniversary, George's birthday and Father's Day. A graveside memorial service will be announced in the spring.
