Down East Singers to perform requiem on Memorial Day
Down East Singers, Mozart Mentors Orchestra and four professional soloists will present Antonìn Dvořák's Requiem, Op. 89, on Memorial Day, Monday, May 26, at 4 p.m., at Watts Hall, 174 Main Street, Thomaston, Maine. The performance will be conducted by Anthony Antolini of Cushing.
Composed in 1890 for the music festival in Birmingham, England, following the successful performance of his Stabat Mater in 1885, the premiere performance was on October 9, 1891, with the composer conducting. The piece was deemed a masterpiece immediately and was performed to rave reviews in Vienna in March, 1901. The Requiem uses the traditional liturgical text and is divided into nine sections of the Mass for the Dead with thirteen musical numbers. The work is scored for four soloists, chorus, string orchestra, winds and timpani.
Soloists will include Erin Chenard, soprano; Jazmin DeRice, contralto; David Myers-Wakeman, tenor; and John David Adams, bass. Jennifer McIvor will play organ.
Admission to the performance is $25, students 18 and younger pay what they wish, but all must have a ticket. Doors open at 3 p.m. Tickets are available on the Down East Singers website, or at the box office on the day of performance if any are left.
