Douglas Anderson Sr., obituary
PORT CLYDE — Douglas Edwin Anderson Sr., 96, entered into rest with his Lord, surrounded by his family, Aug. 31, 2013.
Born in Thomaston, he was the second of four sons of Edwin A. and Helen B. Darby Anderson. Douglas was raised in Thomaston, where his father was fire chief and ran Anderson Café. Attending local schools, he was a member of Thomaston High School's class of 1935.
In earlier years, Douglas worked as a machinist at Whitensville Machine in Worcester Massachusetts and later at Bath Iron Works and at Camden Shipyard. He served four years with the Maine National Guard.
July 1, 1938, he married Verena R. Davis in Thomaston, where they made their first home. They later moved to Port Clyde, where they have since resided.
During the early years of World War II, Douglas built and managed sardine processing plants in Port Clyde for the Zwecker family, and in Rockland for the Witham family. He spent the rest of his career as a lobster fisherman out of Port Clyde. He continued lobstering until his retirement at the age of 89; and, at one time, was recognized as the oldest Port Clyde fisherman.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing well into his 90s, with family and friends. He loved sharing memories and stories of his youth in Thomaston and Rockland.
Douglas was a member of Port Clyde Advent Christian Church, where he served as a deacon and elder.
Predeceased by a son, Ronald D. Anderson in 1994; and three brothers, Donald, Howard and Vaughn; Douglas is survived by his beloved wife of 75 years, Verena of Port Clyde; two sons and their wives, Larry C. and Gail Anderson of Rockland and Phoenix, Ariz., and Douglas Jr. and Rhonda Anderson of Port Clyde and Bonita Springs, Fla.; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren, as well as several nieces and nephews.
