Camden residence sustains heat, smoke damage in fire

CAMDEN — Camden Fire Department, along with Lincolnville, Hope and Rockport firefighters, responded to a house fire on Mechanic Street, near the intersection of John Street, Friday around 1:30 p.m.
By 2:30 p.m., the fire had been extinguished and firefighters were remaining at the mobile home to look for hotspots.
Camden Fire Chief Chris Farley said the fire was contained to the central portion of the home where the washer, dryer and furnace were located.
Farley said the homeowner, Susan Morse, had put a load of clothes in the dryer and then left the home headed for downtown Camden to run errands. When she returned, Farley said she saw the fire, went back outside and called 911.
A cat named Bruce was removed from inside the home soon after firefighters arrived, but despite efforts by Camden First Aid Association personnel to save him, he had succumbed to smoke injuries. Another cat, Lucy, is thought to have been outside but as yet is unaccounted for.
Farley said there was extensive heat and smoke damage in one half of the home, where the fire originated.
