CAMDEN — As it happens every year, first there is Thanksgiving, then Christmas followed by New Year's. Finally, it's dog license renewal time and 2013 is no different.

Camden staff spent two days last week calling 209 dog owners (including your's truly) to remind them they have yet to renew their pet's license, as mandated by state law. The calls are a courtesy to dog owners to help them avoid a late fee and to remind them to get their licenses renewed.

While dog licensing ensures a canine pet is current on its rabies vaccination, also a matter of health for your loyal companion, dogs that are licensed are easier to unite with their owners when found wandering free. That means the license also needs to be securely fastended to a collar, and the collar needs to be on the dog when let outside.

State law requires dogs over 6 months of age be licensed. Dog licenses expire annually on Dec. 31 and the law imposes a $25 late fee for dog licenses that are renewed after Jan. 31.

The cost to license a dog is $6 for spayed or neutered dogs, and $11 for unaltered varieties (male and female).

When licensing a dog, a current certificate of rabies vaccination is required by the town clerk and must show that the immunization is effective at time of licensure. For dogs vaccinated in other states, a certificate of immunization consistent with the requirements of the National Association of State Public Health Veterinarians in effect at the time of licensure will be considered acceptable.

For first time licenses, bring a neutering certificate if the dog has been neutered or spayed.
