Blizzard, flood warnings issued for coastal Maine
UPDATE from NWS as of 11:40 a.m. Friday, Feb. 8: Occasionally heavy snow will make for slippery travel into the afternoon. A band of snow, north of the developing low pressure front, will remain nearly stationary across the area into this afternoon. Snowfall rates of one to two inches per area are possible within this band. The snow will be extremely fluffy in nature but could cause slippery conditions locally. The main event will arrive late this afternoon and especially tonight, when blizzard and winter storm warnings remain in effect.
GRAY — The National Weather Service has just issued a blizzard warning for coastal Maine up through to Belfast. The blizzard warning is in effect from 6 p.m. Friday to 4 p.m. Saturday.
The blizzard warning, issued at 2:56 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 7, replaces the previous day's winter storm watch.
The NWS is still forecasting heavy snow for the area, with accumulations of 18 to 24 inches.
A light snow will begin to fall early Friday morning now, with conditions rapidly deteriorating Friday evening and continuing through Saturday morning.
Blizzard conditions can bring whiteout conditions and low visibility on snow covered roads, as well as blowing and drifting snow. Winds will be from the north at 15 to 25 mph, with gusts up to 50 mph and visibilities of 1/4-mile or less at times.
Temperatures will be 10-24 degrees Fahrenheit.
The NWS is saying that winter storm Nemo, dubbed the "enorm'easter" locally, will make travel extremely dangerous. The NWS is urging travelers to stay home during the storm, carry a winter survival kit if travel is a must, and if stranded – stay with your vehicle.
In addition to the blizzard warning, the NWS Thursday afternoon issued a coastal flood warning due to the drawn-out strong northeasterly winds which will allow for very large seas to develop that may coincide with high astronomical tides. Significant coastal flooding is possible at high tide Saturday morning.
The coatal flood warning is in effect from 4 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 9.
The high tides in Boothbay Harbor are 9:32 p.m. Friday, and 9:48 a.m. and 10:25 p.m. Saturday. In Camden, high tides are at 9:24 p.m. Friday, and 9:43 a.m. and 10:16 p.m. Saturday. In Belfast, high tides are 9:26 p.m. Friday, and 9:45 a.m. and 10:18 p.m. Saturday.
