Bald tires, speed, road conditions all factors in Hope crash
HOPE — A head-on crash between a minivan and sedan on Route 17 in Hope Feb. 11 was caused, in part, to inadequate tires and excessive speed, according to Knox County Sheriff Donna Dennison.
The collision occured just west of Grassy Pond soon after wet, slushy snow began to accumulate on the highway.
According to the sheriff's office, John and Merrie Bettler were heading west on Route 17 in a 2008 Toyota Sienna minivan. Heading east was Jesse Martin, traveling alone in his 2004 Honda Civic. As he drove down the hill between Pushaw Road and the Hope/Rockport town line, he slid into the westbound land and hit the Bettler's van.

Rockport and Hope fire departments and Rockport police also responded to the accident, as did Union Ambulance and Camden First Aid Association.
The three in the vehicles were medically evaluated, and the Bettlers were transported to Pen Bay Medical Center with minor injuries.
According to the report, Jesse complained of soreness, but was cleared at the scene.
All passengers were wearing their seatbelts.
Jesse was issued a summons for two inadequate front tires, which had little or no tread. Jesse was also issued a warning for failing to notify the Secretary of State of a change of address on his driver's license.
"It appears that inadequate tires and speed were primary factors in this crash," the sheriff said, in a news release. Road conditions and weather were other factors, she said.
Knox County Towing removed the Honda, while All Directions removed the Toyota van.
Martin's Honda sustained more than $1,000 damage to the front end of his vehicle. Bettler's vehicle also sustained more than $1,000 damage to the front end. Both vehicles were unable to be operated due to extensive damage.
